The Art of Practicing Happiness:
A Way to Our Inner Rhythm and Harmony

"The man that hath no music in himself
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils:
The motions of his spirit are dull as night
And his affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted…"
— Lorenzo in The Merchant of Venice

The fundamental rhythm of life is expansion and contraction: we vibrate with every breath. We can examine our nature of existence through our vibration. If the vibration is in harmony we feel peaceful, content, a sense of well-being, happiness.

“This happiness or harmony takes less energy and nature seeks the most efficient energy state,” states George Leonard in his book, The Silent Pulse.

So the question to ask ourselves is are we in cooperation or opposition with our fundamental rhythm. Do we hear our inner music?

Oftentimes our habitual patterns respond automatically so that we miss the opportunity to feel the harmony, the happiness. To overcome patterns that do not serve us we need to be aware, awake and choose a different response, a response that ultimately takes less energy and helps us feel better. This practice, a discipline, allows us to make a habit of happiness.

This practice can be done through our senses: listening to music that is pleasing, smelling fragrances in nature, touching a texture that is wondrous to us, tasting a delicious food. All this takes being awake and aware in the moment. Think of your senses as rhythm transformers.

Another rhythm transformer is the breath. Focusing on the breath can be a direct pathway to harmony and happiness. Using the breath is simple, yet not easy. It is efficient. Every moment presents us with an opportunity to be in harmony with our rhythm. By putting our attention on our breath, the nervous system can calm, and the rest of our systems can follow.

All our cells await our decision to live in our fundamental harmonic rhythm and choose happiness. You hold the key.
